This is an exciting opportunity to join the Herts Academic Skills (HAS) team within the University of Hertfordshire’s Centre for Learning, Access and Student Success. The team was formed in September 2023 and is tasked with ensuring that academic skills development opportunities are available to all students, but have the ambition of establishing their service as a centre of excellence, known throughout the sector for its achievements. Within HAS, the Retention Team plays a key role in ensuring that all University of Hertfordshire students are able to access the support required for progression to the next level of their education, achieve their potential, and complete their degree programmes. The team use insights from engagement data to identify and contact students who may be in need of extra support, and then connect them with the services available at the university.
Main duties and responsibilities
The Retention Team Co-ordinator will co-ordinate retention team activities, and will be responsible for the collation of relevant student engagement data, and the maintenance of records of the retention team's work. Supported by an administrator, and the Herts Academic Skills team, with line management from the Deputy Head of Academic Skills, the role holder will recruit and line-manage a group of student employees (Engagement Advocates) tasked with making first contact with non-engaged students. The Retention Team Co-ordinator will need to communicate clearly and effectively with a range of teams across the university, and will monitor and evaluate data collected on records of communication, referrals to other services, and the effectiveness of the work of the Retention Team.
Skills and experience required
You will have experience of working in Higher Education, preferably within a role that supports student engagement. You will have excellent IT and communication skills, and the ability to work on your own initiative and within a team. You will be tactful, diplomatic, and flexible, with a can-do attitude to problem-solving. You will be details-focused and able to work under pressure, and you will be committed to continuous professional development for yourself and for others.
Qualifications required
You will be educated with a minimum of a degree (or equivalent level 6 qualification), or proven experience.
