We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate with expertise in experimental solid-state NMR spectroscopy to join the advanced materials research team of the E.P.S.R.C. project “Pushing the Limits of High-Field Solid-State NMR Technology: Enhancing Applications to Advanced Materials, the Life Sciences and Pharmaceuticals” as part of the EPSRC International Centre to Centre research collaborations scheme. We encourage application from researchers with high-level skills in experimental solid-state NMR spectroscopy of materials and expertise in first principles calculations and numerical simulations.
The project builds on recent publications from the team in developing experimental and computational NMR capabilities, the availability of NMR facilities locally at 400-800 MHz and nationally from 850 MHz to 1.2 GHz at the UK High-Field Solid-State NMR Facility, and the newly established collaboration with fifteen high-field NMR laboratories operating NMR systems at and above 1 GHz. The project will involve travelling to our partner facilities within the UK, in Europe and the US, with the aim to develop new solid-state NMR methodologies that benefit from high magnetic field. You will both develop your own specific new scientific contribution, for example in advanced correlation experiments and/or methods to access dynamics and their applications to materials and contribute to the wider understanding of materials chemistry by the project and international team.
The team works across experimental and computational NMR so you will have the opportunity to assimilate new developments across sub-disciplines. The team advances the NMR discipline, for example by developing new computational approaches for the understanding of disorder in solids (*JACS* 2019) and their applications to complex functional solids (*JACS* 2023), by exploiting measurements at the highest magnetic field (*JACS* 2024) and under extreme conditions to access dynamics behaviours (*Chemical Science* 2022, *JACS* 2024, *Science* 2024), by discovering new isotopic labelling scheme (*JACS* 2020, *Nature Comm* 2019). We implement new NMR methods integrating computation and experiment to advance the understanding of materials. This position therefore offers you the opportunity to both develop new capabilities in materials science and to use those methods to drive materials understanding.
You should have a PhD in solid-state NMR spectroscopy applied to the Chemical, Physical or Material Sciences. A commitment to developing a collaborative research environment is essential, and we will seek examples of this at interview.
If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31.
The post is Fixed Term initially for 32 months.
