We are looking for a research scientist to work on an exciting project to help understand the origin of heavy elements in the universe. Using lab-based data and atomic structure calculations the successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues from across the EU in an ERC synergy project ERC-2022-SYG 101071865 - HEAVYMETAL. The goal of the project is to understand the origins of heavy element formation in the Universe by researching neutron star mergers resulting in Kilonovae. You will thus be a key part of a team of theorists and experimentalists working in the area of atomic and astro-physics. Based in University College Dublin (UCD) the partner institutions in the project are The University of Copenhagen, Queen’s University Belfast and GSI Darmstadt.
The UCD HEAVYMETAL team is part of the Atomic, Molecular and Plasma Physics (AKA Spectroscopy) Group in the UCD School of Physics. The Group has a history of expertise in continuous experimental and theoretical research in laser plasma spectroscopy, going back more than 60 years. The Group currently comprises of approximately 15 staff and postgraduate students, and has a well-equipped suite of laboratories.
Salary Range: €42,000 - €53,000 per annum (pro-rata - if part-time)
Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.
