We are looking for a Research Fellow to develop prediction methods and experimental methods for separating wheel and track noise sources and methods for modelling the noise of a passing train from its individual sources.

You will be working on the EU/Europe’s Rail-funded project ‘QuietRail’. This collaborative project involves 16 European university and industry partners and aims to achieve a step change in the prediction and mapping of railway noise and vibration, in the acceptance testing of new rolling stock, and in the promotion of cost-effective noise mitigation. You will work mainly in the work packages related to noise in curves and transposition, uncertainties in pass-by noise.

The post is based in the Dynamics Research Group (DG) within the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.  ISVR is a leading international centre for research in acoustics and vibration and has a reputation as a leader in noise and vibration research for railways in particular.

You will be required to collaborate with the team at the university and with researchers in partner organisations. You will be expected to attend regular project meetings which may involve overseas travel. You will also be required to report the findings of your work in leading scientific journals and conferences. A suitable level of English is required: for non-native speakers typically IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

You will have a PhD** or equivalent/equivalent experience in vibration, acoustics or a related discipline. A detailed understanding and knowledge of a relevant area of noise and vibration and experience of modelling and use of Matlab or equivalent is also required. Specific understanding and knowledge of railway rolling noise and vibration and/or curve squeal and relevant experience in acoustic modelling are desirable.

Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Giacomo Squicciarini: G.Squicciarini@soton.ac.uk
