The Oxford Department of International Development (ODID) is seeking to recruit a Data Research Assistant who will work as part of the Young Lives research team to support agreed research priorities. The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively with researchers and policy staff in Oxford and the four Young Lives study countries.

The post holder will undertake the following duties:

  • Work closely with the Young Lives data manager in cleaning, organizing, and ensuring the quality of the Young Lives longitudinal datasets, including georeferenced data;
  • Prepare Young Lives survey data for analysis, including producing composite variables; linking and merging data from external sources with Young Lives data where appropriate;
  • Assist archiving the quantitative data, preparing data and documentation for data archiving (e.g. fieldwork manual, survey questionnaires and data dictionaries);
  • Collaborate in maintaining up-to-date documentation of data management processes, creating clear and accurate reports to support research and grant applications;
  • Provide technical support to researchers and collaborators, troubleshooting data-related issues and supporting data requests from research teams;
  • Prepare reports from analyses, including preparing tables, graphs, maps, etc. that can be used to best represent the findings in Young Lives written outputs and presentations;
  • Contribute to technical notes, research publications, book chapters and/or reviews;
  • Contribute to discussions and share research findings with colleagues in Oxford and partner institutions in the Young Lives study countries;
  • Contribute to wider project planning, including ideas for new research papers and sub-studies.

The Data Research Assistant will manage their own activities, within guidelines provided by the Data Manager and senior colleagues.

The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in a quantitative social science discipline (e.g. economics, social statistics) information management, data management or related subject. They will also have advanced IT skills and proficiency in using the STATA, with experience in data cleaning, data analysis, and quality control processes. An interest in issues of poverty, climate change/environment, and international development and a willingness to undertake overseas travel are essential for this role.
