The Space Magnetometer Laboratory at Imperial College is a world leading centre of excellence for space instrumentation, responsible for the design and build of magnetic field instruments (magnetometers) currently flying on the European Space Agency (ESA) Cluster and Solar Orbiter missions and recently launched JUICE mission to Jupiter.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to become part of the highly successful, multi-disciplinary team. The Senior Software Engineer is responsible for the management of the entire software cycle across multiple space projects. This includes both ground and in-flight elements as well as processing pipelines. The postholder will work across projects with several Principal Investigators and Project Managers and Product Assurance managers.

What you would be doing:

You will be responsible for the software activities on space projects assigned by the Head of Laboratory.  Specific projects will include the JUICE and Vigil missions. You will line manage software engineering teams in the case of larger projects and delegate software tasks. You will report to the Head of Laboratory and support them in the specification and maintenance of an overarching software strategy for the laboratory and support read across of software design principles and know-how to other missions.

What we are looking for:

  • You should have a degree in software engineering, or a closely related discipline or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
  • Experience in the management of software projects from concept through to routine operations
  • Experience of writing software requirements and specifications
  • Experience of writing software for telemetered instruments
  • Experience of formal software verification techniques and standards
