The School of Economics at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China invites applications for two Assistant Professor position, beginning February 23, 2026. We are seeking emerging scholars who demonstrate outstanding potential in research and teaching, with a preference for candidates specializing in Macroeconomics (both theoretical and applied), Microeconomics (applied micro, labor, health, industrial organization, financial economics) or Applied Econometrics (including causal inference, machine learning, program evaluation, data science).

The successful candidate will contribute to our School’s mission through a rigorous research program, high-quality teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, and active service. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research addresses substantive economic questions using modern theoretical and empirical tools, and who can enhance our department's diversity, intellectual vitality, and collegial culture. 

Your Responsibility

Your key responsibilities include:

  • To take the lead on, plan, develop and conduct individual and/or collaborative research objectives, projects and proposals either as an individual or as part of a broader programme.
  • To establish a national reputation and regularly disseminate and explain research findings through leading peer-reviewed national publications (on a sustained basis), conferences and other appropriate media.
  • To generate income by developing and winning support for innovative research proposals and funding bids. Where appropriate undertake consultancy projects where there is a demonstrable benefit to the University and academic unit.
  • To deliver teaching across a range of modules or within a subject area, providing curriculum leadership within own area of expertise
  • Be responsible for the design of course modules and/or programmes of study in specialist area and for their quality. Where appropriate identify the need for developing the content or structure of existing modules and make proposals on how this should be achieved.
  • To supervise and examine Post graduate, Masters and PhD students.
  • To contribute to student recruitment and secure student placements and provide appropriate advice to others involved in this activity
  • Be responsible for the safe conduct of work within work area and teaching responsibilities ensuring that the School's arrangements for compliance with the University Safety Policy are implemented.

About You

  • Ph.D. in Economics or a closely related field must be completed by the appointment start date.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex and conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding as well as to peers, using high level skills and a range of media.
  • Ability to devise, advise on and manage learning and research programmes.
  • Ability to manage resources and an understanding of management processes.
  • High level analytical capability to facilitate conceptual thinking, innovation and creativity.
  • Ideally at least 2 years relevant teaching and research experience in higher education sector.
  • Experience and demonstrated success in delivering teaching within an agreed quality framework.

Your Remuneration, Benefits and Support

The successful candidate will be offered a fixed-term contract for up to 5 years, which may be extended by mutual agreement. Salary will be within the range of RMB 450,190 to RMB 592,815 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience (salary progression beyond this is subject to performance) and you will have a range of benefits and entitlements, including accommodation allowance, insurances, schooling support, home flight, relocation & repatriation support, and paid annual leave. You may also be offered a range of Chinese talent schemes application opportunities based on individual eligibility at time of application.
