The Department of History and Classical Studies, School of Culture and Society, invites applications for a position as assistant or associate professor in Public History with a specialisation in Modern History (after 1750). The successful candidate will be expected to take special responsibility for teaching collaborations with museums, cultural institutions and other external partners.

The position will be available from 1 August 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

If the successful candidate is employed in an assistant professorship, the position is a full-time (37h/w), three-year training position that involves research and teaching at the BA and MA level and includes an obligatory course in university teaching for assistant professors. Following the assistant professorship period, an associate professorship within the same academic field will be announced in open competition.

An associate professorship is a full-time (37h/w) permanent position.

The position

The position is a combined teaching and research position associated with the History programme at the Department of History and Classical Studies.

The position as assistant or associate professor is offered with a view to attracting talented applicants with a well-documented track record in innovative and internationally recognised research in the field of Public History. The successful candidate will have expertise in any field of modern history, broadly defined.

With this new position, the department seeks to strengthen its relationships beyond academia. Applicants are invited to reflect on how they will extend and enhance the department's relationships with relevant external partners with a focus on teaching.

Research

The successful applicant will contribute to core activities at the School of Culture and Society and Aarhus University in general and will strengthen the research activities of the Department of History and Classical Studies in particular. They will be expected to participate actively in the research programmes in History, and more broadly within the School of Culture and Society, the Faculty of Arts, and beyond.

The successful applicant will be expected to develop new research projects with internal and external partners and to raise external research funding.

The applicant’s research credentials and publications record within the field will be assessed on the basis not only of existing publications and other research contributions, but also on research potential.

Past research achievements will be assessed based on the active research time of the applicant in question. We therefore ask applicants to specify any career breaks they have had (for instance due to maternity/paternity leave) in order to gauge their research productivity.
