This position will be directly connected to the MPhil in Data Intensive Science. The MPhil is supported by the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, the Institute of Astronomy, and the Department of Physics and has been designed in collaboration with our leading researchers and industrial partners to provide students with expert training in Machine Learning (ML), Statistics, Computing, and their application to research. The MPhil has a growing cohort of students, with a target steady state of 100.
The successful candidate will have extensive experience applying modern data-driven techniques to climate science. They should have a proven track record in research and teaching and be an excellent communicator. They should be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of, and show practical experience with, statistical methods and machine learning algorithms applied to climate science research challenges.
They must be highly organised and motivated and should demonstrate aptitude for programme coordination. They must also be proficient in techniques required for software development best practice, and familiarity with multiple coding languages and high-performance computing is desirable. A PhD in mathematics, physics climate science (or a cognate discipline) is essential.
The successful candidate will be expected to support the MPhil by: the creation, delivery, assessment and examination of a new course module in data-intensive climate science to broaden the scientific content of the MPhil; and the provision of relevant computational projects. They will also be expected to participate as appropriate in the administration of tasks associated with the academic delivery of the MPhil. Due to the fast-moving nature of the topics covered in the MPhil, the role holder would be expected to participate in research in data-intensive climate science to maintain their knowledge of the current status of research and data-intensive techniques used.
Appointment will be made at an appropriate point on the scale for University Assistant or Associate Teaching Professors. Appointment as Associate Teaching Professor will typically require a demonstrable history of exceptional achievement.
