Hours: Full Time

Are you an enthusiastic, skilled technician looking to take the next step in your career? Do you want to work in a world-leading research environment where your expertise truly makes a difference? The School is seeking a technician to join our established Structural Integrity group. This is an exciting opportunity to become an integral part of a vibrant, innovative, and highly respected team.

In this varied and dynamic role, you will provide high-quality technical support across our state-of-the-art Materials, Structures, and ICAIR Laboratories. You will play a vital part in enabling research, teaching, and commercial projects—contributing directly to groundbreaking work that pushes the boundaries of engineering and structural testing.

You will support staff, students, and external partners by offering expert advice, hands-on assistance, and specialist knowledge across a broad range of technical areas. Your responsibilities will include calibrating and maintaining specialist equipment, preparing and setting up complex experiments, and operating servo-hydraulic systems capable of applying loads of up to 1000 kN. You will also design and build bespoke experimental rigs, drawing on your CAD, machining, mechanical engineering, and electrical knowledge to produce high-quality, reliable solutions.

The ability to diagnose faults, carry out repairs, and liaise with external engineers will be essential as you help ensure our laboratories remain fully operational. Additionally, you will contribute to safe working practices by generating rigorous Health and Safety documentation and conducting high-standard risk and COSHH assessments. Training staff and students on equipment and safe operation will also form an important part of your responsibilities.

We are looking for someone with Level 3 qualifications (or equivalent experience) and IOSH Managing Safely certification. You will bring experience in a laboratory environment and solid understanding of instrumentation, electronics, and data acquisition/control systems. Workshop skills are desirable but not essential.

At the University of Sheffield, we value diversity and believe that everyone’s contribution matters. Even if you don’t meet every criterion, we encourage you to apply. Join us and help shape the future of engineering research while developing your own professional skills in an inspiring, supportive, and collaborative environment.
