Job description:
Working Pattern: 35 hours a week
Behind every successful teaching laboratory is a skilled technical team. We are looking for a Support Technician to contribute to undergraduate Chemistry teaching at the University of Sheffield, helping to deliver safe, high-quality practical classes within the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences.
This permanent role sits at the heart of our teaching laboratories. Working as part of a team and reporting to the Technical Manager (Chemistry Teaching), you will help prepare, organise and assist with the running of undergraduate laboratory sessions. Your work will ensure laboratories are safe, well prepared and ready for students and staff.
You will prepare chemicals, reagents and solutions, set up and maintain laboratory equipment, and support the use of specialist instruments. You will provide practical advice to students, demonstrators and academic staff, assist with troubleshooting and calibration of equipment and contribute to maintaining high standards of health and safety through good laboratory practice, accurate records and technical documentation.
We are looking for someone with experience in a laboratory or technical environment, strong communication skills and a professional, customer-focused approach. You should be comfortable working independently and as part of a team, able to prioritise work in a busy teaching environment, and willing to learn and adapt as teaching requirements change.
You may also contribute to outreach, public engagement activities and visit days, helping to showcase our facilities. In return, we offer a permanent role with a competitive salary, generous annual leave, an excellent pension scheme and strong support for training and development.
The University of Sheffield is a remarkable place to work. Our people are at the heart of everything we do. Their diverse backgrounds, abilities and beliefs make Sheffield a world-class university.
We offer a fantastic range of benefits including a highly competitive annual leave entitlement (with the ability to purchase more), a generous pensions scheme, flexible working opportunities, a commitment to your development and wellbeing, a wide range of retail discounts, and much more.
We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
