We are looking for a curious and multi-skilled maker to join our interdisciplinary workshop technical team, supporting diverse workflows within performance-making.
Applying fabrication experience in wood, plastics, metal and 3D digital, you’ll provide specialist expertise in kinetic works to assist the exploration of movement through both analogue and electronic means, across multiple courses in the School of Performance.
With a range of knowledge in materials, processes and interdisciplinary making, together with an approach of thinking through making, prototyping and play, you’ll help breakdown complex information into accessible and inclusive means; supporting students to problem solve and achieve fabricated kinetic works from concept to realisation.
As a Specialist Technician, you’ll be responsible for providing professional expertise, guidance and advice to students, which contribute to the delivery of course and project learning outcomes whilst supporting students' creative intentions. Key delivery methods include troubleshooting issues through tutorials, providing constructive feedback and utilising demonstrations, technical instruction and consultation.
As part of a collaborative technical team, you’ll contribute to developing the learning environment of the 3D Lab by producing learning resources and facilitating daily use of the resource. There should be a focus on sharing knowledge with students and staff with a goal to make the workshop as accessible, welcoming and inclusive as possible. Safety is key in this creative learning and making environment, and you’ll be required to engage in health and safety protocols, regular maintenance, and share best practice with students.
About you
Working as part of an interdisciplinary workshop team at Wimbledon, you’ll bring a broad range of material and process knowledges, with an expansive understanding of kinetics and actuation to support students in developing a proficiency in fabricating props, puppetry, costume and scenic elements with automated components.
We’re looking for candidates with a sensitivity to humble materials, a habit of prototyping and a proficiency in electronics and coding, alongside general fabrication such as expertise in wood, metal, plastics and 3D digital making. You’ll actively help break down complex knowledge of analogue and digitized movement and automation into accessible means to onboard students across different courses, using elements of animatronics in their work appropriate to learning outcomes.
Key to the role is clear communication skills, excellent planning and organisation and an enthusiasm for the community within the team and working as part of both the community at Wimbledon and wider technical workshop team across CCW. With an adaptive and facilitative communication style, you’ll be able to demonstrate experience in guiding a range of learning styles and needs to support a variety of learning outcomes in an inclusive workshop environment.
You’ll be able to take initiative; organize and manage busy workloads effectively, managing multiple priorities, whilst maintaining excellent student experience, best practice and health and safety requirements.
