The Faculty of Classics seeks to appoint two Lecturers in Greek and Latin to join its language teaching team at the University of Oxford. These posts will play a central role in the planning and delivery of Ancient Greek and Latin language teaching for undergraduate and graduate students across a range of levels, from beginners to advanced learners. The successful candidates will contribute to the Faculty’s teaching provision in classical languages, supporting students in developing linguistic proficiency, grammatical mastery, translation skills, scansion, and textual analysis within a collaborative and intellectually vibrant academic environment.

These full-time, permanent posts are based at the Ioannou Centre for Classical and Byzantine Studies, Oxford. The successful candidates will contribute to Greek and Latin language teaching across the Faculty, including assessment, curriculum support, and outreach activities. Candidates will possess outstanding competence in Ancient Greek and Latin, proven experience in language teaching, and the ability to support students across a range of levels and learning needs. Familiarity with online teaching platforms and digital learning resources would be an advantage.

About the role Reporting to the Senior Lecturer in Greek and Latin and working under the overall direction of the Grocyn Lecturer, the postholders will contribute to the delivery and coordination of Greek and Latin language teaching across the Faculty. The successful candidates will undertake approximately 255 hours of Faculty teaching annually, teaching undergraduate and graduate students at all levels, from beginners to advanced learners.

The role includes preparing and delivering lessons, developing teaching materials and online learning resources, identifying learning objectives, and supporting students in their academic progress and language development. Postholders will also contribute to the setting and marking of formative and summative assessments, examinations, admissions testing, and related academic administration.

The successful candidates will support the ongoing development and coordination of Greek and Latin language teaching within the Faculty, including mentoring and supporting graduate instructors, participating in training activities, and contributing to teaching-related administration and curriculum development.

In addition, the postholders will contribute to outreach and widening participation activities, including Open Days, intensive language courses, bridging programmes, and UNIQ activities.
