Munster Technological University (MTU) was established on 1st January 2021 and is the newest University in the South-West with six campuses across Cork and Kerry. MTU has over 18,000 learners, 2,000 staff and 140 courses and programmes ranging from apprenticeships, degrees, Masters to PhDs. Its mission is to lead change and, through education, empower people for a successful future in a globalised world. MTU provides a broad range of programmes and research opportunities across multiple disciplines, contributing to regional development and innovation. This is an exciting time to join the MTU community as they continue through a period of transition and transformation.
MTU is establishing its first professorial appointments to strengthen research leadership, develop talent and extend the contribution of its research to industry and society in the South-West region of Ireland. MTU invites applications for the above post.
The Professor of Photonics will build on an established research platform to advance its scale, international influence and impact.
Photonics is the science and technology of generating, controlling and detecting light. It connects fundamental scientific discovery with applications in communications, healthcare, manufacturing, food, energy and the environment. Developments in photonic materials, devices, lasers and sensing create opportunities for research that advances scientific understanding and addresses significant technological challenges.
MTU has established substantial capability through its Centre for Advanced Photonics and Process Analysis, CAPPA. Its research spans nanophotonics, photonic materials, laser dynamics, spectroscopy, imaging, optical sensing and process analysis. Specialist facilities, an active postgraduate research community and National and European collaborations provide a strong foundation for further development.
The CAPPA Technology Gateway connects research expertise with industry needs, while the MTU@Tyndall partnership provides complementary research relationships and opportunities. Wider university strengths in Science, Computing, Engineering, Health and other disciplines support interdisciplinary applications.
The appointment offers an internationally recognised researcher the opportunity to build on these strengths, develop research talent and lead programmes that connect fundamental and applied photonics with technological, economic and societal benefit.
MTU will be supported in this appointment process by the executive search firm Perrett Laver. Enquiries can be made directly to Chris McCann, chris.mccann@perrettlaver.com.
Applications should be made using MTU’s e-Recruitment system only. Applications will not be accepted in any other format.
Closing date for receipt of completed applications:
1.00 pm on Friday 8th January 2027
