Advert text:
Applications are invited for the position of Director of Medical Education (Clinical Dean), within the School of Clinical Medicine. Reporting to the Head of the School, the Regius Professor of Physic, the Clinical Dean will be a key member of the School's senior leadership team, and will work to provide leadership and strategic direction for medical education in Cambridge.

The teaching of medicine at the University of Cambridge dates back to 1540, and the Clinical School itself opened its doors in 1976. While patient-centred learning remains, as always, at the heart of modern medical education, research in the ever-widening field of biomedical science shapes the extensive opportunities for rich clinical grounding and experience in clinical research, that our students are able to take advantage of. From the first direct measurement of blood pressure to the unravelling of the complexities of DNA and the discovery of monoclonal antibodies, Cambridge Medicine - and its practitioners and researchers - have been in the spotlight. We have a strong commitment to inspirational and innovative medical education, and we endeavour to nurture individuals who will become exceptional in their fields.

We are therefore looking to appoint a dynamic individual who will inspire teams of academic, clinical, and administrative staff, with a clear educational vision for the School. Through dynamic leadership and collaborative working, they will implement this vision in a way that demonstrates the School's strong commitment to world-class medical education, and to nurturing compassionate doctors, rigorous scientists, and responsible leaders of the future. They will continue to foster excellent working relationships with national bodies, other medical schools (particularly in the East of England), and with more than ten Trusts and over one hundred and fifty GP practices, involved with teaching Cambridge medical students. They will represent the School and University nationally and internationally, and will be responsible for all aspects of the management and delivery of the clinical medical course in Cambridge, including financial, physical, and human resources, as well as for governance and quality assurance.

The successful candidate will be of suitable academic standing, holding registration with the GMC and a license to practice, and will be employed as a clinical consultant or Senior Academic GP. They will have a track record of inspirational leadership, and a proven commitment to excellence in teaching and student support. They will have outstanding communication skills, with significant experience of collaborative working, implementing and managing change, and instilling a sense of unity, purpose, and commitment to a shared vision. They will be committed to a process of ongoing quality enhancement across all areas of educational provision, including student experience, curriculum and assessment, administration, teaching delivery, and staff development.

This is an established academic position.

Clinical appointments will be co-terminus and will be an integrated appointment between the University and the relevant NHS Trust / Body. You will therefore also be issued with an Honorary Clinical Consultant Contract by the relevant NHS Trust / Body. You should be aware that if your contract with the NHS Trust / Body is terminated your employment with the University will be terminated, and vice versa.
Clinical appointments will also require GMC registration, Licence to practice and Medical Defence Cover for the duration of appointment.
