Working in any university today\u00a0brings opportunities to meet and work\u00a0with\u00a0a wide range\u00a0of people, whether students,\u00a0colleagues\u00a0or the general public.\u00a0This\u00a0can\u00a0bring\u00a0enhanced\u00a0levels of\u00a0job satisfaction\u00a0in addition to\u00a0the knowledge\u00a0that you are helping students to attain both educational and professional development.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0diversity\u00a0has also\u00a0added\u00a0a great deal\u00a0to the cultural life of universities that staff can tap into and\u00a0make the most of.<\/em><\/p>\n

A variety of opportunities\u00a0exist no matter whether you work at an older\u00a0or newer\u00a0university. The\u00a0benefits\u00a0of\u00a0university\u00a0working life, such as options for further professional training and development as well as leisure facilities and pursuits,\u00a0will be\u00a0outlined in this article.<\/p>\n

Professional development and training<\/h3>\n

Universities\u00a0are\u00a0good\u00a0places to work in terms of keeping up to date\u00a0professionally\u00a0with relevant training offered no matter what your\u00a0employment\u00a0background and job\u00a0role.\u00a0The\u00a0requirement to keep\u00a0staff\u00a0updated and well informed\u00a0about\u00a0legislative changes\u00a0is taken very seriously indeed.\u00a0Legislation includes,\u00a0for example, Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety at work.<\/p>\n

The latter is usually a prerequisite when new\u00a0members of\u00a0staff are recruited and forms part of their induction process. Each institution has its own arrangements in terms of emergencies,\u00a0such as an outbreak of fire,\u00a0but all must meet with national standards.<\/p>\n

Apart from H&S induction sessions, regular updates are offered with opportunities to pursue these further should staff wish to do so,\u00a0such as working towards a First Aid Certificate. Courses are usually\u00a0provided\u00a0on campus at convenient times thus making it easier to attend.\u00a0Being well informed about such issues is\u00a0not only\u00a0invaluable in\u00a0the workplace but in wider life\u00a0more generally so it\u2019s an advantage to be able to attend such\u00a0training.<\/p>\n

Information and training around equality in the workplace are\u00a0also provided\u00a0so\u00a0staff\u00a0are informed about not only the aims\u00a0of\u00a0the legislation\u00a0but\u00a0also\u00a0how to ensure\u00a0compliance.\u00a0If issues arise,\u00a0staff are\u00a0prepared and can access\u00a0further help from the relevant\u00a0departments.\u00a0Once again, the knowledge and the options\u00a0to tap into further training\u00a0are\u00a0useful not only in the workplace but\u00a0also\u00a0more generally.<\/p>\n

There are also opportunities to gain further professional education, training and qualifications. Courses offered by the\u00a0university\u00a0may be open to\u00a0staff enrolment, such as degrees\u00a0and\u00a0higher education teaching qualifications. There may even be\u00a0staff\u00a0discounts.\u00a0In this way, staff can \u2018learn while they earn\u2019 and the courses they enrol\u00a0are offered\u00a0on campus,\u00a0adding\u00a0an element of convenience.<\/p>\n

Linked to this are\u00a0university\u00a0library facilities. The diversity and wealth of books, journals, online resources and other learning materials is often vast and to have these to hand is a major benefit. This applies not only to staff who are undertaking further\u00a0study\u00a0but\u00a0others\u00a0interested in learning more about particular fields, or\u00a0those\u00a0who just want to take out a good book now and then\u00a0for pleasure.<\/p>\n

Libraries are often stocked with newspapers from other countries. This is\u00a0ideal for those learning other\u00a0languages\u00a0but also\u00a0for staff from outside the UK who wish to read familiar newspapers in their own language.<\/p>\n

There are also the good links\u00a0universities have\u00a0with professional bodies to take into consideration and\u00a0the\u00a0opportunities for networking.<\/p>\n

Cultural leisure facilities and cultural events<\/h3>\n

At the start of this article,\u00a0the enhanced cultural aspects of universities\u00a0were highlighted.\u00a0Many\u00a0universities\u00a0have a wide variety of arts, music and other cultural\u00a0programmes\u00a0on offer\u00a0to cater for all tastes. Some have\u00a0purpose-built\u00a0art\u00a0centres\u00a0with concert halls, theatres, cinemas\u00a0and exhibition spaces.<\/p>\n

Others might not have such dedicated spaces\u00a0but have access to local ones in their areas and\u00a0can\u00a0use\u00a0them\u00a0to put on special events, such as student art shows\u00a0or performances related to their coursework. Being a member of university staff\u00a0can mean\u00a0being aware of what\u2019s coming up in terms of\u00a0cultural events and activities, from small to large scale ones. The\u00a0convenience\u00a0aspect\u00a0can be\u00a0raised especially when\u00a0events are offered on the campus where you work.<\/p>\n

For those who enjoy sport, whether watching or participating in it and keeping fit, universities are good places to work. Some have their own gyms, sports tracks and swimming pools that are open for staff to use. No excuse for not keeping fit when an exercise space,\u00a0and perhaps a class or two,\u00a0are right there where you work!<\/p>\n

If sports are\u00a0not your leisure time priority, universities have an increasingly diverse range of cafes and restaurant on campus, or nearby, to enjoy. Things have moved on a long way\u00a0since the days of the student refectory\u00a0when the cuisine was very basic. Some very good places have opened offering staff a wide variety of choice whether for lunch or dinner\u00a0with friends and family. Many of the popular coffee chains can also be found on campuses.<\/p>\n

Overall, taking into consideration a wide range of professional opportunities alongside the leisure and cultural ones, universities as places to work have much to offer.<\/p>\n
