Beijing Foreign Studies University

Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), located on North Xisanhuan Road, Haidian District of Beijing, is one of China’s top universities under the direct leadership of the Ministry of Education of P.R.C. It is listed under Project 985, Project 211, and the “First-Class Project, First-Class University” Project of China.

BFSU specializes in foreign studies that serve the nation’s strategic development. Guided by its motto “Learn with an open mind; Serve a great cause”, the university has produced a large number of high-level cross-cultural professionals as diplomats, translators/interpreters, educators, businessmen/women, journalists, lawyers, and bankers, among others. Among BFSU alumni, over 400 have worked as ambassadors, and over 2,000 as counselors. BFSU is thus known as “the cradle of diplomats.”

BFSU now offers programs in 101 foreign languages, more than any other universities in China, and these include many less-taught European, Asian and African languages. It is among the first bases approved by the Ministry of Education to offer featured disciplines and programs. With its focus on foreign languages and literatures, BFSU has also launched programs in fields such as humanities, law, economics, and management.

The Foreign Languages & Literature program was rated as A+ in a nationwide assessment in 2017, ranking top in China. According to the QS university rankings 2018, The Linguistics and Modern Languages disciplines of BFSU ranked among top 100 globally. In 2020, its Linguistics discipline ranked among top 100, while Modern Languages, English Language & Literature were both located between positions 101 to 200, the highest ranking among Chinese universities.

BFSU attaches great importance to innovative talent management and academic development of its faculty. It now has over 1,200 full-time teachers and supporting staff, alongside with nearly 200 foreign teachers from 60 countries and regions. BFSU has young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions at the national level, leading talents in philosophy and social sciences and teachers of the Ten Thousand Talents Program, visiting professors of the Yangtze River Scholars, talents of the Millions of Talent Program and Talents in Four Fields, and young Yangtze Scholars. Over 90% of teachers have experiences of studying abroad. The faculty of the China Foreign Language and Education Research Center was awarded Huang Danian Type Faculty Team in China.

In 2020, BFSU will implement the tenure-track system for newly recruited teachers. We have been constantly working to enhance our talent pool, step up support for recruitment and training. We aim to attract young teaching and research professionals with plans for establishing a young faculty pool and a globally competitive incentive mechanism.
