Wellcome Sanger Institute

Our Campus

The Wellcome Genome Campus is home to some of the world’s foremost institutes and organisations in genomics and computational biology, committed to delivering life-changing science with the reach, scale and imagination to solve some of humanity’s greatest challenges.

Our beautiful campus is a hub for visitors from around the world and offers a stimulating working environment with world class facilities including restaurants, cafés, a gym, many acres of beautifully maintained grounds, a state-of-the-art conference centre and a children’s nursery.

It is the base of the Sanger Institute, EMBL-EBI, Wellcome Connecting Science, YourGenome, a Conference Centre and the BioData Innovation Centre.

Collectively, we believe that to seek and find solutions to humanity’s greatest challenges demands a bold and imaginative approach.

We bring together a diverse and exceptional scientific community who rise to those challenges, in a culture and environment that fosters creativity and rewards bold, ambitious thinking.

Emanuel Gonçalves, Postdoctoral Fellow
What have you done since completing your postdoc at Sanger?

I finished my Postdoctoral Fellow in September 2020. I’m currently an Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico – University of Lisbon and a Principal Investigator at INESC-ID in Lisbon, Portugal.

Sanger is a unique place. The capacity to deliver cutting-edge science at a large scale profoundly inspired the way I do science and many of the scientific areas I am pursuing in my lab – for example, applying functional genomics approaches to study the genomes of thousands of cancer cells using novel artificial intelligence approaches.

For prospective PDF fellows, it is important to note that the Sanger is geographically and scientifically very close to numerous world-leading institutions, such as EMBL-EBI and the thriving Cambridge University and Hospitals.
