This appointment offers an exciting opportunity to join the Department of History in the School of History and Cultures at Birmingham. The department has an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching. In REF 2021 History was again ranked in the top ten nationally, with high-calibre research publications as well as strong impact beyond the academy. The appointee will also benefit from interdisciplinary engagement across and beyond the School, particularly through the Birmingham Research Institute for History and Cultures and our various research centres.
We seek a specialist to consolidate and develop our research and teaching in Histories of Race in the United States. We would especially welcome applicants with an existing research focus on the period post 1945, though this is not essential. We particularly invite applications from historians whose research directly links with the Department’s established strengths in social and cultural history, including histories of identities, gender and sexuality, family history, histories of communities, memory, migration and diaspora, and material culture.
This appointment reflects the department’s identification of US history and histories of race as priority areas across our core activities of education, research, impact and public engagement. The successful candidate will be expected to support and enhance our teaching provision in these areas. In the first year the appointee will contribute to the following modules and programmes: The Making of the Contemporary World: Modern History c.1800 to the Present; Africa and its Diasporas; Group Research; MA in History (US History and Historiography); UG and PGT Dissertation Supervision.
In subsequent years, the successful candidate will be supported to design and deliver undergraduate and graduate optional modules to reflect their own specialisms as well as participating in compulsory and team-taught modules and acting as doctoral and postdoctoral supervisor/mentor.
