Job summary
Applications are encouraged for a Research Associate position in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. This role will work on the project ‘Experimental measurements of kinematics for free surface waves and turbulent mixing.’ The research conducted will provide new physical insights in extreme events in Fluid Mechanics and produce engineering guidance on how to best approximate such circumstances.
This project strives to deploy laser-based imaging techniques to investigate both the kinematics of extreme waves arising over coastal bathymetries and the interaction between plumes and eddies in enclosed geometries. The former objective will complement recently completed experiments on the free surface elevation of waves and associated numerical simulations. The latter will complement observational data measured in a real-size classroom and will advance the knowledge of flow regimes developing in ventilated environments with realistic heat sources.
Duties and responsibilities
You will carry out experimental investigations of a novel design for a tidal elevation energy extractor in the Hydrodynamics Laboratory (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/fluid-mechanics/hydrodynamics-laboratory/).
You will work under the direction of Dr Ioannis Karmpadakis and Dr Costanza Rodda to carry out data analysis and design and implement physical model testing. You will also be required to write reports for submission to research sponsors, and to present findings to colleagues and at conferences.
