Academic Development Programme - new Assistant Professors will undertake a 5-year development programme, at the end of which they are expected to be promoted to Associate Professor. The programme consists of a variety of development opportunities and the time to reflect and develop.

The University of Birmingham is recruiting an Assistant Professor over the next 12 months, who will join our existing team of twelve investigators plus seven additional new recruits from the Colleges Arts and Law (CAL), Life and Environmental Sciences (LES) Medical and Dental Sciences (MDS). Each recruit will grow their independent research programmes while directly contributing to the seven-year, €400 million project: European Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals (PARC).

Birmingham Law School is seeking to appoint to hold Assistant Professorship in law. The School has a particular preference for those with teaching and research interests in Environmental Law, Environmental Advocacy, Tort Law, Health Law, and chemicals regulation.

This is closely linked to the work of the new Centre for Environmental Research and Justice (CERJ). This is a new transdisciplinary Centre based on the University of Birmingham's success at creating a new area of research and training with the aim to transform environmental health protection using precision toxicology. This Centre assembles experts from initially three Colleges, including CAL, LES and MDS.

You will contribute to a range of enterprise, engagement and impact (EE&I), research, teaching, and administration. In addition, you will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, developing, and maintaining generous, mutually respectful, and supportive working relationships with all staff and students, and ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others can carry out theirs.

EE&I is likely to include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, Centre outreach, or similar activities at School and Centre levels or further within the University.

Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to: (a) the management, development (including programme/module review) and delivery of teaching and assessment; and (b) enhancement of the student experience or employability. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, (b) supervising and examining PhD students, and (c) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.

Research is likely to involve initiating, conducting and disseminating original research. Your research will have measurable outcomes reflected in your growing national (and ideally international) reputation.

Management and administration are likely to involve contributions at School and Centre levels, and/or making an important contribution to some managerial/leadership activities (e.g., working groups) within the University.
