The School of Collective Intelligence (SCI) - Mohammed IV Polytechnic University (UM6P, Morocco), is seeking highly motivated individuals to join our PhD program as full-time PhD Researchers.

As the world’s first school of Collective Intelligence, SCI is a multidisciplinary research center consisting of a group of over ten researchers, who work in diverse fields such as cognitive science, cultural evolution, participatory democracy, and computational social science. Our school is looking for candidates who are passionate about pursuing a research-focused PhD in the field of collective intelligence and have excellent academic and research skills.

The ideal candidate should have a background in one or more of the following areas: anthropology, computer science, engineering, mathematics, psychology, social sciences, cognitive science, or related fields.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research in the field of collective intelligence.
  • Develop and execute a research project in collaboration with the faculty.
  • Publish research papers and present research findings at conferences and workshops.
  • Assist with teaching duties on our master's degree in collective intelligence.
  • Participate in departmental and university-wide activities.
  • These positions are full-time and require relocation to Rabat, Morocco.

Some research lines currently underway in the department (it will be helpful to specify if one of these lines of research is of interest in your application):

  • Economic, demographic, and cultural transitions in the High Atlas (risk management, education, sharing networks, intergroup relations and cooperation) (Profs Alami & Seabright).
  • Scientific thinking outside of scientific institutions (research into styles of thinking used in non-literate communities and businesses) (Prof. O’Madagain)
  • Computer support for large-scale crowd deliberation about complex problems (Prof. Mark Klein)
  • Social dynamics of collective systems including small groups and large crowds (Prof. Mehdi Moussaid)
  • Collective intelligence in sports (Prof. Brent Strickland)

Candidates interested in any of these research projects are encouraged to reach out to the corresponding professors to learn more.

Admission Requirements:

  • A master's degree in the mentioned fields,
  • Excellent academic records,
  • Strong analytical and research skills,
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written),
  • The ability to work independently and in a team,

To be considered, the following document are required:

1. Detailed resume (CV) in English with a maximum of 2 pages containing:

  • Education background
  • Details of bachelor's and master's degrees, including accreditation status, research training as well as the field of study.
  • Previous research output, such as publications, participation in research conferences, research awards (if available).
  • Programming and software skills (if available).
  • Language skills.
  • Work experience (if available).
  • Names and contact details of two to three referees.

2. Cover letter in English with a maximum of 2 pages that addresses:

  • Why are you applying for a PhD position at SCI/UM6P?
  • What are your motivations for enrolling in a PhD program?
  • What relevant skills make you the best fit for this position?
  • What are your research interests and reasons for pursuing them?
  • What lines of research currently underway in the department would you like to contribute to?

3. Certified copies of diplomas (with detailed transcripts of bachelor's and master's degrees)

4. Two letters of recommendation

5. Research project proposal (2-3 pages) in English, specifying the scope, research problems and hypotheses, theoretical and conceptual field of investigation, and potential benefits for UM6P, Morocco, or Africa; please also specific if your research project connects with one of the lines of research currently underway

6. If available, please can you provide test scores (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL or any previous university admission test rank), along with supporting evidence.
