We are seeking a hard-working Research Associate to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

You will undertake specific research relating to the CHAMP2 and PIC-BATT Projects, funded by Innovate UK with the specific aim of improving electrified propulsion technologies. Within these projects, the University of Bath will be responsible for the delivery of thermal modelling of various powertrain components, powertrain testing, and powertrain calibration.

Specifically, you will provide skills in 3D heat transfer and fluid dynamics modelling to the projects. Within CHAMP2 these skills will be applied to electric motors and batteries. Within PIC-BATT these skills will be applied to novel designs of immersivity cooled battery packs.

You will be expected to proactively engage with the thriving research community of around 25 academics, 20 researchers and 100 PhD students.

This is a full-time position, fixed term until the end of March 2025.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A PhD within a relevant subject area
  • A broad experience in different heat transfer modelling techniques, and how these can be appropriately applied to different problems. This may include 0D, 1D and 3D simulations of components and systems, as well as experience using commercial CFD tools;
  • Research experience in the automotive sector and an appreciation of the specific challenges and constraints of this field
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, with the potential to publish in high quality journals
