Job Summary

Interested in working at the frontiers of Engineering and Medicine and making a difference in cancer treatment? Have you got experience in the processing/synthesis and characterisation of (bioresorbable) polymers and hydrogels?

Join this adventurous project, funded by CRUK Convergence Science Centre, in collaboration with young leading research teams from Imperial College London (ICL) and Royal Marsden Hospital (RMH) / Institute of Cancer Research (ICR).

Our aim is to make minimally invasive tumour ablation safer and more effective by protecting tissues from inadvertent ablation. New injectable bioresorbable materials and devices will be developed that can protect non-target vulnerable tissues during ablation. This will prevent patients having complications that require further therapies (e.g. surgery) and will reduce recovery times and costs.

Duties and responsibilities

You will carry out research on bioresorbable polymers and hydrogels, under the joint supervision of Dr. Emiliano Bilotti (ICL) and Dr. Edward W Johnston (RMH/ICR).

You will generate a set of pilot data, to demonstrate the project proof-of-concept, and work towards attracting larger grant/program funding, instrumental to future in-vitro/in-vivo studies and potential commercial exploitations.

Essential requirements

You will have experience in (most of) the following:

  • Processing/synthesis and characterisation of polymers and hydrogels
  • Smart Polymers and Actuators
  • Additive manufacturing
  • Polymer degradation

Research Associate level

Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Engineering, Materials Science or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research or industrial experience.

Research Assistant level

A first / Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, Materials Science or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research or industrial experience
