Job summary:

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to assist in the development of microwave and millimetre-wave masers utilising spin-defect materials such as diamond, silicon carbide and hexagonal boron nitride for applications in quantum technology.

Work will focus on developing novel microwave and millimetre-wave resonator and cavity technologies which support masers based on spin-defect materials. The work will attempt to improve upon the state-of-the-art in masers as well as exploring new applications in quantum technologies.

A researcher is sought with a PhD in physics, materials, electronic/electrical engineering, physical chemistry or related disciplines and a passion for constructing experimental hardware and instrumentation coupled with an understanding of the underlying physics and the ability to perform electromagnetic simulations.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Your research role will primarily involve the development of new resonator and cavities suitable for a maser operating at microwave and millimetre-wave frequencies
  • You will perform electromagnetic simulations predicting the performance of the maser
  • You will design, fabricate and characterise diamond maser devices and experiments

Skills, knowledge and experience

  • This research will be conducted at a nexus where RF/microwave, optical and spin physics meet. You will preferably have practical and theoretical experience in microwave/radio-frequency physics, optics and quantum technology.

Skill and experience in the following would be advantageous:

  • Computational electromagnetic modelling, analysis methods and tools (such as finite-elements, finite-difference time-domain methods etc.).
  • Simulation, design and test of microwave cavities and circuits.
  • Microwave and/or optical systems and instrumentation in a laboratory setting.
  • Nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond or other spin defects

Candidates who have not yet officially been awarded their PhD will be appointed initially at Research Associate (with a salary range of £41,694 to £44,888.
