The role

An exciting opportunity has emerged for two skilled and motivated Tool Room Machinists to join our team as Mechanical Workshop Technicians (internally referred to as a Specialist Technician), this role offers the chance to contribute to cutting-edge projects within the Faculty of Science & Engineering at the University of Bristol.

Depending on your skills, experience, and knowledge, this position will be designated as either a Level 1 or Level 2 Specialist Technician.

What will you be doing?

  • Working with key stakeholders (e.g. Principle Investigators) to provide specialist workshop services; developing concepts/plans in close collaboration with those stakeholders.
  • Operating, servicing, maintenance and calibration of workshop equipment, including CNC and manual machine tools, hand tools and specialist equipment.
  • Diagnose and rectify complex problems in engineering projects and workshop tools to find short and long-term solutions.
  • Keeping accurate records and drawings; analysing and interpreting project requirements, iterating design/implementation as required.
  • Training others in specialist techniques, processes and procedures where necessary.

You should apply if

Level 1 Technician:

  • Experience in engineering workshop practices, including milling, turning, and fitting, coupled with a solid practical understanding of contemporary design tools, manufacturing processes, and safety protocols.
  • Basic proficiency in relevant specialist software such as CAD, Autodesk Fusion, and CNC systems.
  • A passion for foundational engineering principles and a capacity for advising and supporting customers, including research staff and students.

Level 2 Technician:

  • Extensive experience in engineering workshop practices, encompassing milling, turning, and fitting, with a robust practical grasp of contemporary design tools, manufacturing processes, and safety standards.
  • Proficient in relevant specialist software such as CAD, Autodesk Fusion, and CNC systems.
  • A commitment to providing guidance and assistance to both expert and novice customers, including research staff and students, in matters of engineering principles and applications.

This position is well-suited for individuals with:

  • experience as a tool room machinist – milling, grinding, turning
  • experience in tool-making, manual machining, CNC
  • an apprenticeship (mechanical) completed (desirable)
