The UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science delivers five of the most popular undergraduate subjects (Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Pharmacology) in the UCD Science Programme. In addition, the School delivers six highly sought after taught MSc programmes (Biotechnology, Biotechnology & Business, Biotherapeutics, Biotherapeutic & Business, Toxicology & Regulatory Affairs and Biological & Biomolecular Science). Both our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes include laboratory-based classes. In addition to our teaching activities, the School is home to over 40 academic staff with highly successful research programmes.
The School is seeking to appoint a Senior Technical Officer to provide technical support to the School’s MSc Programmes. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the undergraduate teaching laboratories and to participate in the development of new practical classes and practical tutorials where required. As a Senior Technical Officer, the appointee will be expected to have ‘hands on’ experience in a teaching or Masters laboratory setting within a University or similar environment. In addition, the candidate will be required to support the research programmes of the School and to undertake other duties as may be requested by the Head of School, that are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Technical Skills:
•Champion continuous technical improvements, setting standards and engenders flexibility within the team
•Responsible for the maintenance of equipment used in both research and teaching activities to the highest standard possible
•Keep up to date with technical developments and lead others in the adaptation to new technologies.
Health and Safety:
•Champion best Health and Safety practices
•Adapt to new techniques and technologies that are introduced and do so with safety in mind at all times
•Review and report on working practice within the School/Unit, highlighting potential risks or hazards where appropriate
•Work with others to ensure safe working practice are followed
•Ensure that safe practice and the use of protective equipment and clothing are part of the normal day to
day routine
Management & Planning:
•Plan and prioritise work to meet the goals/targets of the School/Unit and delegate work as required
•Contribute to the delivery of objectives of the School/Unit and how they link to the overall programme of work
