We are seeking to recruit a registered nurse (mental health, and/or child)  to contribute to supporting the University of Birmingham (UoB), School of Nursing and Midwifery (SoN&M) expanded undergraduate and postgraduate pre-registration nursing portfolios. You will join a team who are working to ensure our students continue to receive excellent clinical skills and simulation-based learning. 

The school offers a range of routes leading to registration including a three-year Bachelor of Nursing, a four-year Master of Nursing, and a two-year postgraduate MSc programme. The school also offers a range of programmes aimed at qualified practitioners including Advanced Clinical Practice, independent prescribing, and an MSc Midwifery (RN to RM). 

Role Summary

  • Contribute to all teaching and learning, particularly clinical skills and simulated practice across all nursing and advanced practice programmes (under the supervision of an academic member of staff) 
  • Demonstrate professional integrity by acting as a role model for evidence-based, inclusive, person-centred simulated clinical practice so learners can mirror accountability, professional values, and appropriate delegation. 
  • Work with learners to develop clinical skills integrating theory to practice, developing an understanding of safety and risk minimisation and effective person-centred communication. 
  • Provide high quality learning and teaching activities, materials and presentations based on sound educational principles. 
  • Engage in student assessment, evaluating educational activity and maintaining safe learning environment

Main Duties

  • Teach courses at a range of levels to undergraduates, postgraduates and CPD students, predominantly through practical demonstration and simulation, and if required formal lectures and seminars, so that the School’s learning objectives are met.
  • Contribute to the design of content, modules and operationalisation of curricula with other colleagues.
  • Plan and prepare own teaching, including guidance notes and handouts in accordance with the established objectives of the programme and University best practice.
  • Devise and supervise projects, student dissertations and skills/simulated clinical learning
  • Develop an approach to planning, reviewing and evaluating own teaching.
  • Undertake full range of responsibilities in relation to providing formative and summative feedback, supervision, marking and examining.  (This will include assessed work contributing to the final award – as a mark or as a credit – such as objective structured clinical examinations [OSCEs]).

Person Specification

  • Bachelor degree in a healthcare or cognate discipline
  • Registered Nurse (RN)  child, or mental health field or dual qualified with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
