The Bar Standards Board (BSB) regulates barristers called to the Bar in England and Wales in the public interest. We are responsible for setting the education and training requirements for becoming a barrister. The vocational stage of training ensures that students intending to become barristers acquire the skills, knowledge of procedure and evidence, attitudes and competence to prepare them for pupillage.

The role of the Examinations Independent Observer is to provide independent assurance to the Board, stakeholders and to the public that:

  • the Centralised Examinations of Bar Training are conducted in a robust way;
  • systems are in place for continual improvement of the Examinations;
  • systems are in place for the effective handling of complaints and challenges.

To be considered for this role, applicants are required to have experience and skills in the following areas:

  • Experience of assessment/examinations and knowledge of best practice
  • Experience of undertaking process reviews
  • Excellent written, listening and strong observation communication skills
  • Ability to assimilate and analyse large quantities of information to draw rational, robust and evidence-based conclusions
  • A critical, enquiring and analytical mind
  • Objectivity and independence
