About the role

You will be joining Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting, one of the subject areas in the School of Culture and Communication. Colleagues in this area deliver teaching and research within their specific language area, contribute to cross-language modules in culture, teaching, translation and interpreting, and engage with relevant scholarship. We offer European languages – French, German and Spanish – from beginner to advanced (post A-level) (CEFR A1-C1), as well as Arabic, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Catalan and Portuguese as elective languages and/or pathway languages within a degree.

At undergraduate level, Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting offers BA Modern Languages and BA Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting as single honours degrees, as well as a range of joint and Combined honours degrees. We support major-minor combinations in the School of Social Sciences and a Modern Languages pathway for Business students at the School of Management. We also offer postgraduate degrees in Translation and Interpreting and Professional Translation with a range of language options.

In the first instance, you will be expected to teach and assess French language at all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate study, from French for Beginners to post A-level French, including general and professional language, and develop this provision as required. There is the possibility of supporting and developing specialist teaching in the successful candidate’s area(s) of expertise in future years, subject to student demand, staff capacity and the needs of the subject area. Further duties will include delivering pastoral care to an appropriate number of academic mentees, the supervision of undergraduate projects, and contributing to administrative duties within the immediate subject area as required by the Head of the School or such other person delegated to act with their authority.

Equality, diversity & inclusion

The University is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity in all its practices and activities. We aim to establish an inclusive environment and welcome diverse applications from the following protected characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race (including colour, nationality, ethnic and national origin), religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation.

As an inclusive and welcoming workplace, we value people for their skills regardless of their background. Applications are welcome in Welsh and will not be treated less favourably than those submitted in English.
