The Role

We are looking to recruit an innovative educator to provide expertise in teaching, learning, and administration to support the continued development of our architecture courses at both FE and HE levels. The individual must provide leadership on our Department of Architecture Year 0 course, with a particular emphasis on the delivery of design and practical skills to boost progression into Year 1 of our undergraduate architecture courses. The individual must also be able to work effectively with the team and be open to working across modules to meet the needs of the department. 

The successful individual will demonstrate creative pedagogy to support student progression and enhance their skills in architectural design, iteration, experimentation, and representation. It is also desirable that the individual have experience in delivering a design studio in a UK architecture school, with a relative understanding of critical current debates in the profession and wider creative industries, with focus on climate literacy and ethics. 

This must be underpinned by a strong sense of design and a clear pedagogical position that supports the learning of students in the initial stages of their architectural education. The ability to support with curriculum development activities, monitoring processes and pastoral support are essential, as are a collaborative approach to teamwork with the Course Leaders and Head of Architecture.

This role will:

  • Set creative agendas focused on architecture and spatial design associated to current critical debates, whilst enhancing student’s communication, representation and professional skills appropriate to the level of teaching;
  • Lead and coordinate the delivery of the Year 0 curriculum in architecture, including lectures, seminars, and tutorials;
  • Take responsibility to ensure high-quality teaching and learning;
  • To support when required, with the integration of the ARB and RIBA professional criteria into the curriculum of our architecture courses;
  • Achieve and maintain learning and assessment standards that demonstrate techniques at the forefront of architectural design, with knowledge of the principles of climate literacy, ethical practice, and health and life safety;
  • Meet internal progression targets in accordance with institutional strategies and regulations; and
  • support the Course Team in the administration, recruitment, and promotion of the architecture courses.

Working closely with the Course Leaders in the Department of Architecture, the individual will deliver teaching across Year 0 of the architecture courses, that may include students interested in pathways related to architecture, interior architecture, and urban landscape. The role may also require support with the teaching on our undergraduate programmes, particularly at Level 4. Moreover, the individual will participate in cross-disciplinary activities and knowledge exchange to enhance the collaborative approach at Ravensbourne. 

Outside of the academic teaching weeks, the role will require the preparation of learning and teaching materials, curriculum development, maintaining professional competences, admissions and recruitment, coordination, citizenship, consultancy, as required by the Department of Architecture.  

The Candidate

The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of ARB and RIBA requirements at Parts 1, 2, and 3 in UK schools of architecture, coupled with knowledge and experience of architecture and spatial design and the requirements of FE and HE education in architecture. 

The candidate will possess excellent organisational and communication skills and the ability to engage students directly with their chosen industry will be essential. HEA accreditation or a PGCE is desirable. Candidates without a teaching qualification will be required to achieve this within 2-years of appointment into the role. 

The candidate will work 5-days per week in the Department of Architecture throughout the calendar year. They will be required to teach students across our professionally prescribed and validated courses, and courses without professional recognition. 

It is desirable that applicants have knowledge and understanding of current architectural design practice and a keen interest in innovative and emerging technologies that can benefit the profession. The candidate should be familiar with working across virtual learning environments and associated teaching methodologies and develop and apply innovative teaching methods using a variety of different resources/materials, contributing to Ravensbourne’s teaching within the creative disciplines.
