Research Fellow in Sustainable Construction & Retrofit

Nottingham Trent University - School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment

Location: Nottingham
Salary: £31,607 to £36,371 p.a. pro rata, Grade G
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 7th May 2024
Closes: 28th June 2024
Job Ref: 550677

We now seek to appoint 2 Research Fellows to join the team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on the grand societal challenge of climate change, with a focus on enabling a resilient and sustainable built environment that is healthy and safe to occupy. It is also a great opportunity to help shape and influence the research work that the new Centre will carry out. We are looking to appoint two people with progressive ideas, an openness to learning across multiple disciplines, and a willingness to engage with complexity in the pursuit of scaleable, yet quality-driven, solutions to sustainability in the built environment.

These posts are not connected to externally-funded research projects in the first instance, so the work programme has some flexibility in terms of the priorities of the Centre for Sustainable Construction and Retrofit (CSCR)  and the specific interests and experience of the successful candidates. The common objective of the research team is to conduct high-quality, impactful research. There will be opportunities to learn new skills and develop ideas for new research projects. Initially funded for two years, the aim is to use these new posts as the basis of creating a new research team, subject to success with external funding applications.

Net-zero by 2050 presents a huge challenge for buildings and the construction sector, with up to 50% of carbon emissions attributable to the building, maintaining and operation of buildings. While the mitigation of emissions is one challenge, the adaptation of the existing built environment is becoming increasingly urgent, globally.

In 2022 NTU made a strategic investment of £1.5m to create the new Centre for Sustainable Construction and Retrofit (CSCR) within the School of Architecture Design and the Built Environment. The CSCR addresses applied research questions with a focus on how the built environment sector transitions to become physically resilient and sustainable. In addition to research, the Centre is developing and delivering new courses, and working locally, regionally and nationally on Knowledge Exchange with communities, businesses, government and other stakeholders. Find out more about the CSCR here .

Interviews will take place week commencing: 15th July 2024. Closing date is 28th June 2024.
