About us

By joining the force of the EPSRC funded project ORBITS and EU JU-SNS project 6G-MUSICAL, the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at UCL invites applications for one (1) postdoctoral research position in Optical-assisted Wireless Communication and Sensing Systems.

The successful candidate will work alongside the investigators on defining key performance indicators (KPI) and developing optical and microwave subsystems for future 6G communications.

The research will be supported by the state-of-the-art optical and wireless communication facilities across Optical Networks Group and Information and Communication Engineering Group at UCL. The successful candidate will work closely with a team of experts in UCL and the 6G-MUSICAL consortium.

About the role

The research work harnesses the low-noise signal processing technologies developed within ORBITS project and merges them in advanced wireless communications systems in the 6G-MUSICAL project.

The Research Fellow role involves project management, communication with project partners, theoretical and experimental research on advanced optical and microwave subsystems. Specific research tasks include developing precise clock synchronisation and low noise signal generation techniques to enable next generation integrated communication and sensing systems, as well as experimental validation of the new techniques in high-speed wireless transmission systems using advanced signals. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to research reports and deliverables as required.

The post is available from October 2024 for 24 months in the first instance. Further funding to support the post may be available.

About you

Candidates should have a PhD (or about to submit) in a relevant branch of science or engineering (Electronic Engineering, Information Engineering or Physics). Experience in an optical and/or wireless communications laboratory is essential, as is the hands-on familiarity with state-of-the-art RF/optical test-and-measurement equipment. Applicants should possess programming skills in MATLAB or Python, for automated result acquisition, data processing and data analysis.

Knowledge of electronics and photonics co-design and experience in advanced electronic and optical test instruments (e.g., spectrum analyser, oscilloscope, phase noise analyser, arbitrary waveform generators) are desirable.

If the successful candidate has not yet been awarded their PhD, appointment will be made as a Research Assistant (Grade 6B). Payment at Grade 7 will be backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis including corrections, once the PhD has been awarded. Research Assistant (Grade 6B): point 25-28. Salary range £37,332 to £39,980 (inc. London Allowance of £5,000 pa).
