Global Health and Infection (GHI) have been core to the BSMS strategy since the medical school opened in 2003. These disciplines have grown alongside BSMS and the department of GHI emerged in 2014. The department runs a vibrant research programme with academic links around the world via the Sussex Centre for Global Health Research, with a dedicated area being multidisciplinary research on three Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). Podoconiosis is one of those Neglected Tropical Diseases which is a key focus for the department and its partners. One of those partners is Footwork, a charity founded by Professor Gail Davey in 2012.
Footwork’s vision is ‘A world free of Podoconiosis’. BSMS are looking to recruit a Resource Mobilisation and Strategy Manager to ensure the sustainability and drive the implementation of the strategic plan to support Footwork’s mission; ‘To improve the lives of individuals and communities affected by podoconiosis by bringing together public and private partnerships to accelerate treatment and prevention’.
