Applications are invited for appointment as Professor on Tenure Terms or Tenure-Track Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Urban and Regional Planning and/or Urban/Regional Economics in the Department of Urban Planning and Design (Ref. 526378), to commence on August 1, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. Appointment will be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. Exceptionally outstanding candidate at Professor/Associate Professor level may be considered for appointment on tenure terms.
HKU’s Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) is an internationally leading planning school with excellence in teaching and research in urban studies, urban planning and urban science. Its vision is to offer leadership in intellectual and methodological developments in the field, as well as making lasting impact on urban planning, management and policy developments in Hong Kong, mainland China, the Belt and Road Region and further afield. DUPAD has over 40-year history of blending urban science, planning, design and policy analytics and has one of the strongest groups of urban data scientists in the world. It is also active in interdisciplinary research, with strong links with geography, public health, real-estate and urban economics, transport, architecture, social science and environmental science groups in HKU and other universities.
The Department is one of the most well-established and globally respected urban research centres in the Asia-Pacific region. The Department offers a range of taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and M.Phil./Ph.D. research programmes in urban studies, urban and regional planning, urban design, urban analytics, housing studies, transport, and healthy cities. The Department seeks an outstanding scholar with proven international leadership (for senior ranks), or a rising scholar with demonstrated potential (for junior ranks) in research, teaching and knowledge exchange in the field of urban and regional planning, and/or urban/regional economics.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in relevant fields, and a good general background in urban scholarship as well as their research specialisms. They should have a distinguished and sustained record of (for senior ranks), or great potentials for (for junior ranks) conducting high-quality impactful research, as indicated by publications and competitive grants, international recognition for scholarship, capability of leading interdisciplinary projects and proven managerial and leadership skills (for senior ranks). They should also have versatile academic ability and personality, intellectual and practical vision, and an aspiration/ability to develop strong connections with industry and the public sector. A track record of research in the Asia-Pacific region will be an advantage but is not essential. Applicants will be considered for appointment as Full/Associate/Assistant Professor based on experience.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
