The University’s Tax, Treasury, and Reporting function are responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant tax legislations, regulations, and reporting and disclosure requirements, and we are currently looking to recruit a Tax Manager who will leverage their excellent technical knowledge to provide strategic finance leadership and strategic tax advice across all areas of the University.
About the role
Reporting to the Head of Financial Reporting, Tax & Treasury, as the Tax Manager, you will manage the tax relationship with both internal and external stakeholders. This will include being the lead point of contact with HMRC and managing relationships with external advisers, as well as building and managing relationships within the central Finance function and across the University as required, ensuring University staff at all levels have an awareness of tax issues, and training tools and resources to improve knowledge in this area.
You will be the VAT lead on ongoing Campus Redevelopment and large Estates projects, and will ensure the optimisation of VAT recoveries in relation to capital projects and maintenance. In addition, you will lead strategic improvement to the efficiency and effectiveness of the processes and controls to support the tax operations within a strong internal control environment, managing compliance with all indirect and direct tax matters across the University, including its subsidiary companies.
You will provide direction, support, and line management to the tax team, comprised of a Tax Analyst and Technician, ensuring a speedy response from the tax team for any ad hoc tax-related queries across the University.
About you
With significant post-qualification (CTA or similar) tax experience, and having operated at a senior financial level within a large, complex environment, you will have substantial professional VAT experience, as well as a strong track record of leadership at this level - providing direction, delivering results, building on relationships and capability and demonstrating personal resilience.
You will have authoritative general knowledge of UK taxes and how they apply to a large charity and its subsidiaries, and with a proven track record of dealing with tax matters in a large and complex organisation, you will also have a comprehensive understanding of the VAT environment in the UK, and how it specifically applies to the charitable/ education sector.
The successful candidate will have outstanding and proven analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make well-considered decisions, resolve conflicts and demonstrate sound, professional judgement. They will also be a strategic thinker, with the ability to develop strategy and policy and implement effectively.
