Child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEA) is a global problem that requires a global response. However, the lack of reliable and comprehensive data relating to CSEA is a major inhibitor to developing more effective and evidence driven prevention and response strategies and policies.   

The appointed candidate will serve as Deputy Director of Data for Childlight – Global Child Safety Institute to provide management and leadership support to the data programme. The postholder will be engaged in international CSEA research with significant experience in leading research, attracting funds, and supervising early career researchers. It is expected that this post will help develop and work to the Childlight data and impact strategy.  

This role will contribute their expertise to leading courses on the new MSc in Child Protection Data Futures. This post is expected to contribute data outputs and curating impact related to their work for the University’s Research Excellence Framework exercise alongside other faculty at the data institute.  

The Opportunity: 

The postholder will be responsible for:  

  • Contributing to the development, management, and delivery of excellent research and research-led and practice-based teaching on the prevalence and nature of child sexual exploitation and abuse globally.  
  • Lead courses on the new master’s programme in Child Protection Data Futures including identifying and supervising student placement and project-based dissertations.   
  • Providing research and policy leadership by supervising early career colleagues, masters and doctoral students and post-doctoral research fellows within Childlight,  
  • Conducting research and dissemination aligned with Childlight’s strategy and mission, attracting external funding to sustain and grow this programme.  
  • Deputising as needed for the Director of Data to contribute to data programme at Childlight – Global Child Safety Institute to contribute leading evidence on working with data to understanding the magnitude and nature of child sexual exploitation and abuse globally and creating impact from this evidence by improving response and prevention, and 
  • Engaging with key stakeholders around knowledge exchange and impact from research in order to improve child protection systems and to prevent violence against children.  

Your skills and attributes for success:  

  • A significant academic profile, with a PhD and a track-record of leading research grants and attracting research funding in the area of international child sexual exploitation and abuse research 
  • Expertise in the area of child sexual exploitation and abuse research that has had a demonstrable impact.  
  • Experience of leadership in research as a PI of research grants and in knowledge exchange through effective public engagement. 
  • Significant portfolio of high-quality research publications in child protection research that are REF-able. 
  • Experience of developing and leading courses on violence against children and/or research methods  
  • Experience of mentoring and developing colleagues at various career stages including PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. 
  • Proven track record of working with policymakers and child protection system actors (police, health, etc) and curating impact.
