Job Summary

An exciting new opportunity has arisen for an early career researcher to join the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis to join an inter-disciplinary project exploring strategies for malaria eradication. The post-holder will focus on developing and applying models to evaluate the impact of existing and novel malaria vaccines and other therapeutics on the burden of Plasmodium falciparum in African settings.

The post forms part of a wider programme of research on mathematical modelling of malaria including approximately 30 academic staff, research fellows, research associates and PhD students. The team have extensive links with research groups across Africa and globally, and for this project will directly work with research teams developing and testing new vaccines.

The Medical Research Council (MRC) Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis is an international resource and centre of excellence for research and training in the epidemiological analysis and modelling of infectious diseases. The Centre works closely with national and international agencies to support policy planning and response operations against infectious disease threats. The Centre is a WHO Collaborating Centre for Infectious Disease Modelling and staff of the Centre work closely with WHO and a range of other global health agencies to support translation of academic work into tangible impact.

Duties and Responsibilities:

We are seeking a research assistant or associate to work on an inter-disciplinary project exploring strategies for malaria eradication. A particular focus for this position will be to develop and apply models to evaluate the impact of existing and novel malaria vaccines and therapeutics on the burden of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa contexts.

You will work within a team of postdoctoral and academic staff within the Centre and with research teams external to Imperial (in the UK and African countries) who are engaged in a programme of work to develop and evaluate new vaccine-based strategies to reduce both the burden of illness and the transmission of the parasite.

Essential requirements

• An MSc or PhD in infectious disease epidemiology, mathematical modelling, statistics or related subject or a similar quantitative discipline
• Experience in epidemiological data analysis and infectious disease transmission dynamic modelling
• Knowledge of R programming language
• Experience in communicating research findings to specialist and non-specialist audiences
• Experience in publishing academic research, with an appropriate track record of publications commensurate with experience.
• Ability to work independently but also as part of an interdisciplinary team
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Further Information

This post in full-time, fixed term until 31 of December 2025 and you will be based at White City Campus.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £41,694 - £44,888 per annum.
