About us

The Development Planning Unit (DPU) is an international centre specialising in academic teaching, practical training, research and consultancy in the field of urban and development policy and planning. It is concerned with promoting sustainable forms of development, understanding rapid urbanisation and encouraging innovation in the policy, planning and management responses to the economic, social and environmental development of cities and regions, especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The academic staff of the DPU is a multi-disciplinary group of professionals and academics, all with extensive and on-going research and professional experience in various fields of urban and institutional development throughout the world.

About the role The MSc BUDD programme immerses students in the critical theory and practice of urban design. The course is designed to recalibrate mainstream practices towards new modes of inquiry and action, that centre on social processes of design towards just urbanism. At its core, the Practice module is a design research oriented module that includes studio-based and fieldtrip components, and that equips participants with the expertise to address current urban challenges . The MSc SDP programme is designed to equip students with the practical skills and theoretical foundations for addressing the challenges and complexities of the field of Social Development. It explores processes of social change, mobilisation and development that can generate greater equity and wellbeing for people with diverse identities living in cities of the Global South.

About you

We are seeking to appoint a highly competent individual to work across the MSc BUDD and MSc SDP programmes at the Bartlett DPU. We are seeking applicants with a solid academic record and excellent teaching, research and practice experience in diversity and citizenship processes, as well as urban design theory and practice in the Global South. The candidate must have the ability to integrate fast into established teams and adapt to consolidated pedagogical programmes. Candidates need to have a background in urban design or related spatial/urban disciplines and to be educated to PhD level in subject areas related to diversity, inclusive citizenship and urban theory and praxis.
