About us

The mission of the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health is to improve the health and well-being of children, and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children’s health research outside North America. GOS ICH’s activities include active engagement with children and families, to ensure that our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. The Institute offers world-class education and training across a wide range of teaching and life learning programmes which address the needs of students and professional groups who are interested in and undertaking work relevant to child health.

About the role

The post offers an excellent opportunity for a research administrator to coordinate and support a health research programme for policy about children and families. The successful candidate will provide administrative and research support and will help the effective functioning of this busy, friendly and committed team. This is an excellent post for candidates wishing to develop a career in academic or government research or in research administration relevant to policy. This post holder will assist the NIHR Children and families Policy Research Unit (CPRU) programme leads and CPRU Unit Manager to provide proactive and professional administrative support. They will work on their own initiative and as part of a team that currently consists of 9 researchers and 10 Co-Investigators across several institutions, as well as government colleagues. The role includes assisting with human resource requirements within the team, administration of the programme budget, coordinating and minuting meetings, submitting manuscripts and project reports and supporting CPRU’s communications strategy. This post is a pivotal role in proactively supporting the academic activities across CPRU and maintaining good working relationships with government. The post-holder will also have the option to contribute to research activities (approximately 30% of time), including literature searches and reviews, assist in systematic reviews, appraising research and policy documents and summarising information about data resources. This post is funded until 30/06/2026 in the first instance.

About you

You will need a degree in a relevant subject or have the equivalent experience. You will possess a demonstrable ability to undertake initiatives, prioritise and plan appropriately, both independently and as part of a team. You will have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with others to develop effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels and across organisational boundaries. Experience working in an administrative/PA role, preferably within a Higher Education, research or policy-focused organisation is essential. It is also essential to have skills in finance management, including the processing and recording of transactions; monitoring budgets and using a financial software package. Experience of coordinating the recruitment of new team members in accordance with HR procedure is essential. You should also be able to deal with difficult situations diplomatically, calmly and with discretion.
