Glasgow Caledonian University and First ScotRail seek a highly motivated and practically oriented Performance Development Engineer to undertake a 2 year project which aims to carry out critical evaluation of current maintenance activities of railway rolling stock in collaboration with stakeholders. The project will also involve conducting reliability centred maintenance and statistical analysis of failure data and implement innovative maintenance optimisation and condition monitoring techniques to help support cost effective decisions in productivity improvement of train fleets and hence ensure availability and reduced delay impact minutes.

The challenge of this position will be to re-engineer and enhance the developing of both analytical and technical skills in maintenance optimisation, software & condition monitoring hardware product utilisation, identifying potential train failure causes and opportunities for utilisation of sustainable business development.

The project outcome is expected to have direct impact on service delivery and cost and improved train availability through reduced maintenance downtime, increased reliability and reduced in service failures. Both in the operational efficiency of the business (cost savings) and the Group’s ability to deliver/win new franchise opportunities.

The successful candidate should possess a high degree of numeracy and a minimum of a 2.1 or higher degree in Engineering or Science discipline, and a strong knowledge and interest in field of maintenance and reliability of systems. It is desirable that the person has knowledge of mathematical modelling, statistical analysis and its applications. Computer programming skills (C++, Matlab) would also be desirable. Candidates must have excellent organisational, interpersonal, practical and problem solving skills. Strong technical and analytical skills are also important. Candidates should be enthusiastic and confident with the ability to influence people.
