Roman Archaeology

Salary: £27,854 - £36,298 pa.
Limit of tenure: 1 September 2013 to 28 February 2018.
The Faculty of Classics is seeking to appoint a Research Associate (Roman archaeology) from 1 September 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The post is to provide assistance to Professor Martin Millett during his tenure as head of the university's School of Arts and Humanities. It is open to those with a primary research interest in the archaeology of the western Roman Empire.
The successful applicant will benefit from the world-class facilities offered by the University and the generous support of research and teaching provided by the Faculty. The Faculty currently teaches approx. 250 undergraduates reading Classics (all of whom study both Greek and Latin language to degree level) and almost 100 graduate students (reading for Masters and doctoral degrees). It is one of the leading international centres in Classics, with some 40 teachers in Faculty and College posts. The successful candidate will be expected to work with Professor Millett on a series of fieldwork and other archaeological publication projects.
Candidates will need to show evidence of the following qualifications, skills and experience:
- PhD in Roman archaeology.
- Knowledge and experience of academic editing.
- Ability to handle archaeological texts in modern western European languages.
- Strong ability to use computer graphics (eg. Illustrator, CAD) and GIS programs (eg. ArcMap).
- Experience of archaeological excavation and post-excavation analysis.
- Experience of archaeological survey (geophysics and topography).
- Willingness to develop skills using new survey equipment and software.
- A driving licence is desirable as some travel will be undertaken to archaeological sites.
