The Division of Social Statistics and Demography is recruiting a researcher to work on an exciting research project funded by the Wellcome Trust entitled ‘Partnerships and sexual behaviour in rural South Africa in the era of HIV and ART’. The study seeks to describe patterns and changes in sexual behaviour and partnership in a rural South African population with high HIV prevalence and increased access to ART, and to identify relationship-based predictors of risk for HIV within couples.
You will be responsible for conducting statistical analysis of existing demographic surveillance data to investigate the health, sexual behaviour and relationship trajectories of a cohort of couples living in rural South Africa. You will be expected to carry out literature searches, data analyses and contribute to the drafting of conference and journal papers.
You will have a postgraduate degree in Demography or a relevant quantitative social science, experience in the management of large and complex datasets, particularly longitudinal data, as well as advanced statistical analysis skills and extensive experience of using STATA or SPSS. You will be an enthusiastic researcher, with an interest and enthusiasm for the substantive aims of the project and will be able to work both collaboratively and independently within a small team. You will also have very good written and oral communication skills.
The post will be based in the School of Social Sciences on the main Southampton University campus at Highfield and is tenable from June 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.
