Visiting Fellowship Programme

Baltic Defence College

As part of its drive to enhance its research output, promote a strategic research community within the Baltic States, and enhance its internal teaching and educational activities, the Baltic Defence College runs a Visiting Fellowship Programme. This programme aims to provide the means for two researchers annually – one during spring and one during autumn (three months) – to join the faculty and engage in an independent research project and teaching activities within the Baltic Defence College.

Every Visiting Fellow will be offered the following resources during their period of residency in Tartu:

  • Budget: €675.00 (for accommodation for three months); €2,000.00 (for transport to and from Tartu); and €1,325.00 (for research purposes);
  • Stipend: No stipend is offered – this position is ideal for a researcher on sabbatical from another institution;
  • Accommodation: Ida Street Apartments (one bedroom apartment);
  • Facilities: Office space at the Baltic Defence College

Output Requirements
Every Visiting Fellow should expect to undertake the following during their time at the Baltic Defence College:

  • Research output: One presentation at a Roundtable Seminar and one 4,000-7,000 word article (to be published in the Journal on Baltic Security);
  • Teaching output: Ad-hoc assistance with courses at the Baltic Defence College.

Applicants must have:

  • Advanced academic degree in International Relations, Strategic/Defence Studies, International Law, Military History, European Security or related field;
  • Participated in at least one previous research project, resulting in an academic (or related) publication.

Applicants must include:

  • An Application Form [Download];
  • A Curriculum Vitae;
  • A Cover Letter explaining previous research projects (if any).
  • We will look particularly favourably on research proposals focusing on deterrenceterritorial defencepeacebuilding, the Wider Baltic and Russia.
