Applications are invited for a Teaching Fellow position in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. With a minimum of a Masters qualification in computing or a very closely related area, the successful applicant will have practical expertise in key areas of computing (such as programming, databases and software development) and substantial experience in teaching and pedagogic development. Experience in curriculum development would be advantageous. The postholder will teach up to four modules per year in addition to administrative responsibilities.
Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a unique collaborative institution, the first university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. Established in 2006, the first cohort of students graduated in August 2010. The university now has over 9,000 students studying on campus. The language of instruction in Years 2 to 4 is English. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led, and has recently committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus.
CSSE aims to provide its students with a solid theoretical foundation which is coupled with strong emphasis on practical applications and implications. The academic members are actively engaged in research of international quality. The Department has been successful in attracting funding from local, provincial, national, and international funding bodies. It currently offers two undergraduate programmes: 1) BEng Computer Science and Technology, and 2) BSc Information and Computing Science, and contributes significantly to three further undergraduate programmes: 1) BSc Information Management and Information Systems, 2) BEng Digital Multimedia Technology, and 3) BSc Bioinformatics. Its postgraduate provision includes: 1) MSc Applied Informatics, 2) MRes Computer Science, 3) MSc Financial Computing, and 4) MSc Social Computing. The Department currently has 37 master’s student and nearly 20 PhD students.
XJTLU is located in the Higher Education Town of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), well-connected via nearby airports to cities in China, Asia, North America and Europe, and via high-speed rail to other major cities in China. SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by over one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. Greater Suzhou is now the seventh largest concentration of economic activity among Chinese cities in terms of GDP ($222 billion in 2014). The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and the I.M. Pei-designed Suzhou Museum attracting millions of tourists each year. SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there are a variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants, entertainment hubs and a great nightlife. Suzhou is also home of four international schools.
The salary range for the positions is 20,570 – 31,673 RMB/month (Teaching Fellow). In addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance and relocation expenses. Overseas staff may receive a tax “holiday” of up to three years, depending on nationality and personal circumstances.
