The Francis Crick Institute (the Crick) is a research institute dedicated to discovering the fundamental biology underlying human health, with the aim of improving the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human disease.


We are seeking an experienced systems engineer to continually develop and support our advanced storage systems for ingest, analysis, and visualisation of data from scientific instruments and simulations, currently based on Spectrum Scale and Ceph, and help develop our architecture for high throughput data analysis as requirements evolve. This system is integrated with our advanced SLURM-based HPC cluster and OpenStack cloud, with a user base of around 1250 researchers.

You will be at the forefront of technology, working together with scientists, engineers, and manufacturers across the globe to give our institute the most advanced tools to perform data intensive research, in a dynamic and exciting research environment.  Therefore, the role has a strong Research & Development component to ensure that the Crick provides the most advanced Scientific Computing capability to its researchers and collaborators.

The Role

You will join the Scientific Computing Platforms Team within the Scientific Computing group in IT&S, and will work in collaborative projects such as eMedLab – one of the most advanced HPC cloud services for biomedical research in the world - with peers in world-renowned research organisations such as the Sanger, EMBL-EBI, UCL, KCL, QMUL, and LSHTM.

You will be educated to degree level, preferably with a Computer Science or engineering related degree (or equivalent qualification) with demonstrable experience of developing, administering, managing and maintaining High Performance Computing environments as well as their user base. You will have a strong Unix/Linux system administration background with experience of Simulation Software Applications, Scheduling Software such as SLURM, Cluster computing and Parallel Storage.

You will be a team player with great interpersonal skills who possesses excellent analytical skills to determine requirements for comprehensive and reliable solutions.
