Singapore Management University (SMU) is seeking to appoint a senior scholar as the Dean of the School of Law (SOL).
One of five autonomous universities in Singapore, SMU was established in 2000 as a specialised university. SMU’s vision is to be an iconic global-city university in Asia that excels in tackling the world’s complexities, impacting humanity positively and producing leaders through its transformative education and multi-disciplinary research. The university houses six schools in the areas of Accountancy, Business, Economics, Information Systems, Law and Social Sciences and has over 9000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, around 350 faculty members across six schools and over 16,000 alumni. SMU’s city campus is a state of the art facility located in the heart of downtown Singapore, fostering strategic linkages with businesses, government and the wider community.
School of Law
Established in 2007, SOL has done exceedingly well and established a strong reputation both in the region and internationally. The school’s mission is to build a collegial team of excellent researchers and educators and to nurture lawyers who will lead and serve the community with distinction.
The programmes offered include Bachelor of Laws, Juris Doctor and the Master of Laws. SOL adopts the SMU pedagogy of interactive seminar-based learning and the curriculum includes components such as internships with law firms and corporations, international exchange programmes and overseas legal studies missions. The school also offers shorter courses for professional development through its continuing legal education efforts. The current student body includes over 620 undergraduates and approximately 152 postgraduates and 44 full-time faculty. The expertise of the school’s faculty ranges from commercial and international trade law to constitutional and criminal law. SOL faculty have obtained degrees from leading universities like Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, Yale and Stanford. They have published widely in top international journals and have contributed actively to the development of the jurisprudence of Singapore.
As the academic, strategic and administrative leader of the school, the Dean will accelerate SOL’s progress as a leading law school in Asia. S/he will work with faculty to raise the distinctiveness and further grow the school’s education programmes; guide and mentor faculty towards research excellence and deepen the school’s linkages with other schools, the legal community, businesses and government. S/he will spearhead innovations and establish new opportunities to respond to the fast-evolving legal landscape in Singapore.
The ideal candidate will have excellent academic and professional credentials to merit appointment as a full professor of law, a proven record of leadership in a school of similar scope and complexity, a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and inclusively with a wide range of internal and external partners and a demonstrated record of interest in Asia. Strong communication and negotiation skills, and the ability to galvanise a strong team are also important for this position.
