Lecturer/Associate Professor in English Literature

The Department of English is seeking a Lecturer/Associate Professor in English Literature, with research and teaching expertise in any area of literature from 1800 to contemporary periods. The successful candidate will be able to provide evidence of high quality teaching and publications (appropriate to career stage), and evidence of strong potential in both areas. Good communication skills, clear commitment to the student learning experience, and the ability to work in a diverse international context are essential. 

Successful applicants will have a PhD and be able to demonstrate appropriate professional experience. Applicants should have good teaching experience and evidence of the ability to produce high quality research publications. Applicants are expected to be able to teach in English, the language of instruction at the university, and to teach students for whom English is a second or additional language. Successful appointees will be expected to engage in undergraduate teaching; to undertake research and publication in their area of specialization; and to participate in the administration and development of the Department of English. Candidates for the role of Associate Professor should also have a strong track record in teaching and academic supervision, as well as an international research profile in their field and a successful record of research funding. 

Literature is a growing subject area at XJTLU. A half-programme in literature is already available on our interdisciplinary degree programmes BA English and Communication, BA Applied English, and BA English and Finance/International Business. Graduates specializing in literature have gone on to further degrees at Russell Group and other elite institutions, and the Department of English now wants to consolidate this success by growing its literature provision. The successful applicant would be expected to contribute teaching on one or more of the following modules: ENG105 Close Reading; ENG106 Literature in Context; ENG118 Literary Theory; ENG207 Literature of the Enlightenment; ENG212 Postcolonial Literature; ENG214 Jane Austen; ENG217 Literature and Gender. Current third year options include The Gothic, Modern Poetry, Postmodern Literature, and British Romanticism, and the appointee would be expected to contribute or to develop a further option course. 

This role is particularly suited to early and mid-career academics, who will be able to benefit from the opportunities for fast-track career development in the Department of English and at XJTLU. The university operates an open and evidence-based annual promotions process, and new hires in literature have been able to progress to Associate Professor grade within a single appointment term. The successful applicant will be able rapidly to gain valuable experience and qualifications in a UK quality-assured international HE environment. Particular features of the post include: 

  1. Fast-track development of extensive learning and teaching experience. New Lecturers are invited to take on the design, delivery and assessment of entire modules, starting from the first or second semester of appointment, depending on experience. (Programme-level involvement is also a possibility within the first year of appointment.)
  2. Professional accreditation in learning and teaching. New Lecturers are automatically enrolled on the HEA-accredited Certificate in Professional Studies, with on-site and Liverpool-based mentoring from a subject specialist. Successful completion of CPS is possible within two or three years, leading to a Diploma from the University of Liverpool and FHEA status.
  3. University of Liverpool honorary teacher status, with full access to electronic research resources.
  4. Opportunities to supervise PhD students via Liverpool University’s Off-site Doctoral Programme.
  5. Immediate access to substantial internal research funding opportunities through the XJTLU Research Development Fund.
  6. Training in developing electronic learning resources. New Lecturers receive professional training in the use of state-of-the-art lecture-capture technology, supporting the development of MOOCs and other digital learning platforms. 

The successful applicant will also benefit from the exciting international context and community that the university offers. XJTLU is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees.
