Warwick Clinical Trials Unit wish to appoint a Principal Research Fellow to work in their facility attached to Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust. The research group at HEFT currently run pragmatic trials in emergency and critical care. The Principal Research Fellow will work closely with clinicians in the acute sector who are looking to expand their portfolio of applied clinical research to include trials in other areas of acute, emergency and critical care.
Warwick CTU is an NIHR registered CTU with a substantial portfolio of NIHR funded studies. As well as trauma and orthopaedics, current areas of interest include cancer, critical and emergency care, rehabilitation and pain. Warwick CTU has around 120 staff including six professors, two associate professors and five principal research fellows. There is strength at Warwick CTU in clinical trials statistics and trial methodology, health economics, health psychology and physiotherapy and the unit is part of the Division of Health Sciences that has expertise in nursing research, medical statistics & epidemiology, evidence synthesis, and sociology.
The majority of Warwick CTU’s research and administration functions are housed in purpose designed premises at the University of Warwick’s Gibbet Hill campus. However, this post will be based at both the modern research facility at HEFT (MIDRU) with the post-holder expected to work from the Gibbet Hill site for around one to two days per week.
The Emergency and Critical Care Group comprise a Professor of Critical Care Medicine (Professor Gavin Perkins), Senior Research Fellow (Dr Claire Hawkes), Research Fellow (Dr Keith Couper) supported by a team consisting of a senior project manager, trial coordinators, administrators and research associates. In addition there are several academic trainees attached to this group.
The post holder may come from any discipline relevant to the conduct of clinical trials; e.g. statistics, psychology, physiotherapy, nursing. They will be expected to work with clinical colleagues to develop a programme of research related to clinical trials in acute / emergency / critical care to include both randomised controlled trials and methodological research related to clinical trials in the acute care sector.
This exciting new post will involve establishing acute care as a major theme of research within Warwick Medical School and Heart of England Foundation Trust. You will be expected to develop a portfolio/programme of grant funded research activity which may include clinical trials or other methodologies in the area of surgery. You will also provide senior input across a wider portfolio of research at Warwick Medical School potentially including rehabilitation trials running in Warwick CTU.
