The Faculty of Natural Sciences (www.imperial.ac.uk/naturalsciences) is seeking an outstanding candidate with a background in laser physics and/or synthetic chemistry to join the Faculty Health and Safety team in supporting teaching, research and promoting a positive Health and Safety culture.
Working as part of the Faculty Safety Team, your core responsibilities will be to use your knowledge and skills to advise staff and students on health and safety practices relating to use of lasers and/or chemicals, and other research hazards and risks. This will include developing safe procedures, promoting best practice, inspecting facilities and assisting with training to ensure statutory compliance along with the implementation of safety policies and procedures at all levels within the Faculty.
You must have appropriate relevant academic or vocational qualifications in laser physics or synthetic chemistry, or equivalent research or industrial experience. You will have experience of technical issues associated with a range of hazards involving lasers and/or chemicals, together with experience of laboratory safety procedures. You will also be expected to demonstrate practical experience of a range of laboratory equipment and techniques, and have experience of training others in techniques and use of equipment associated with chemicals or lasers. You will also have experience of writing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and risk assessments (RAs). A sound knowledge of health and safety processes or procedures applicable to the higher education environment would be an advantage.
You will have proven analytical and problem solving capabilities and will be able to demonstrate excellent organisational skills and accomplished verbal and written communication skills. You must also be able to act with authority and diplomacy.
